NOTES ON THE CHURCHES
These pictures of rural and community churches in Nacogdoches County, Texas include most of those churches
outside of the current Loop that surrounds the city of Nacogdoches. This is U.S. Hwy. 59 on the West and Stallings
Drive or Loop 224 on the North, East, and South. There are nine districts and many small communities in this area.
The nine districts are Cushing, Central Heights, Nacogdoches, Garrison, Douglass, Martinsville, Woden, Chireno and
Etoile. These pictures represent the 112 rural and community churches as they existed from August of 2010 through
April of 2011. Seven of the included churches face Loop 224 but are outside of the Loop. In sequence they are
Calvary Baptist Church, Northwood Baptist Church, Kingdom Hall of Jehova's Witnesses, Zion Hill First Baptist Church,
Stallings Drive Baptist Church, Iglesia Christiana, Union Cross Baptist Church and Christian Life Center Church.
The percentage of denominational types is: Baptist 55.55; Methodist 17.59; Pentecostal 6.48; Church of Christ 5.55;
Independent or Non-denominational 3.7; Apostolic 2.7; Catholic 2.7; Presbyterian 2.7; Christian Church Disciples of
Christ .92; Church of the Living God (C.W.F.F.) .92; Jehova's Witnesses .92; and Seventh Day Adventist .92. Thirty-one
of these churches have an associated cemetery next to or within sight of the church, twenty-nine of them with the
same name, and seven of these are marked as Historic cemeteries with a State of Texas Historical Plaque.
